On to the ferry

Pushing the Midget - C'mon ya'll can we please just get  it to the shade?
Changing fuel pump in a cornfield!
Disposing of a piece of crap fuel filter
We leave Princeton on Hwy. 91 which is a nice two lane road with more corn planted in almost every square inch.  There is a small ditch on either side of the road, and the corn right on the other side of the ditch.  About a mile out of town the friggin' fuel pump craps out again.  I'm coasting down the road, with no shoulder, looking for a driveway to pull off.  There is none.  I roll to a stop, going up a slight hill, with a driveway about 100 feet ahead.  I put the hazard flashers on, jump out and start pushing.  A nice older gentleman behind me stops his car and gets out to help push.  Paul pulls into the drive and runs back and the three of us push it up the road and into the gravel driveway into, you guessed it, a cornfield!  We push it about 25 feet into some shade.  It's really not bad in the shade and there is a slight breeze.  So, we're getting pretty good at fuel pump replacement and we pull out the new pump Paul just bought today!  Only takes about 15-20 minutes and the new pump is in and working.  Now, we're on our way with no spare pump.  We'll stop at the next O'Reillys!  Surely, there is one in the next block.  Unfortunately, we have almost left civilization.  Marion is the last small town before the ferry.  There are two! auto parts stores in town, neither is an O'Reillys.  The first, a NAPA, said he just sold a pump like we want about an hour ago!  Turns out, it really wasn't the one we needed, but he said there is another parts store on the other side of town (about 6 blocks).  This is a brand of auto parts store I have never heard of, Bumper to Bumper, I think.  So, we stop and ask and lo and behold, the guy has two hanging on his wall, a low pressure and a high pressure.  We take the low pressure one and walk next door to the ice cream store the girls went in while we were at the parts store.  It's the "88 Dip" and its been in business since 1952!  The girls finished their ice cream and we headed off to the river.  The car is running fine and about miles later we get to the ferry.  It's a short wait as the ferry crosses, unloads, picks up another load and comes back.  We load up and meet Lonnie Lewis, who owns the ferry and is paid by the state to run it.  He's owned it for 20 years, but the ferry has been in operation here for 200 years!!  A short ride across the Ohio River and we're at Cave-in-Rock state park and our cabin for the night.  The cabin is great, nicer than the Hampton Inn last night. And, its right on the river.  We ate at the lodge and off to a good night sleep so we can do it all again tomorrow.  Except, without the car trouble!

  1. Looks like a good time. My wife is from Marion KY, and I know the 88 Dive...er... Dip well. Bumper to Bumper is like the IGA of autoparts stores. Locally owned and operated, but uses a collective wharehouse system. I usually prefer them over the Big Box stores as the parts people are usually shade tree mechanic type guys if not properly trained technicians.

  2. Jack... are you sure that car was ready for such a haul across the country? :)
Hope things are going more smoothly now! Sounds like an exciting trip!
