Heading home

6/19/2016

Heading home today, taking new roads we haven't been on before.  Went through some nice small towns, including Bardstown, KY.  Outside of town, you could smell the mash cooking in one of the distilleries we passed!  We stopped for the night in Crossville, TN.  We drove downtown to eat at a restaurant and found out they were closed on Sunday.  Not only that, most every other restaurant in town is closed today.  So, we ended up at one of the few eateries opened - Krystal!!  We will get home tomorrow, get the mail and dog, and then wash clothers and the car!

Louisville British Bash

6/18/2016

This morning we ate breakfast at the hotel, then drove about 4 blocks to the waterfront park for the British Bash put on by the Louisville British Car Club.  This is an all British show, unlike the MG2016 show which was only MGs.  It was hot as hell again today,  but the show field is next to where MG2016 was and there is a small park with trees for much needed shade.  There is also some shade provided by the shadow of the overhead Interstate roadway.  Luckily, our parking spot was in the shade!  There were over 100 cars present, many that stayed over from the MG2016 event.  The people in the red Midget next to me were very nice and drove about 2100 miles from Calgary, Canada!  Fittingly, they won first in our class.  Some pictures from the show:

After the show was over, we went back to the hotel to cool off before taking the hotel shuttle to dinner.  We ate at the Garage Bar in NuLu.  It was a very popular place with a bar and small menu with some unusual pizzas.  We got a corn pizza.  Yes, sounds weird, but it was actually quite good. I washed it down with an equally good beer - Wittekerke from Belgium. We walked around NuLu a little then called it a night.  We'll be heading home tomorrow.

Today is our off day.

6/17/2016

We did not attend the awards banquet last night, but I was told that I was awarded 3rd place in my class (out of 17)!

We're staying for the British Bash (an all British) car show on Saturday, so we did some more exploring today.  We moved to a hotel downtown yesterday and today we walked to breakfast at a Wild Eggs downtown.  After breakfast, we walked back to the hotel, got the car and set out to see more of Louisville and surrounding areas.   First stop was Middletown, a small town about 20 miles east of Louisville.  It was small, alright. The "historic" downtown had one or two shops and a couple of restaurants.  However, Kathy found the one cute, well-stocked gift shop and did her part to boost the local economy!  Next stop was Anchorage, KY which is right next door to Middletown.  It was even smaller - we didn't even see a shop.  After that, we started back toward Louisville by a different route.  We got on River Road, which follows the Ohio River.  We stopped at the Captain's Quarters for lunch.  This is a restaurant and bar that overlooks the Ohio River.

After lunch, we continued on River Road back to downtown Louisville and took the bridge over to historic downtown Jeffersonville, IN.  Jeffersonville is home to the famous Schimpff's candy company, which has been in business since 1891!  Along with a large selection of homemade candy, they also have an old fashioned soda fountain.  We got a couple of pieces of candy to try and they were quite tasty!

Chocolate turtle from Schimpffs.  This is obviously a male turtle as his nuts are visible!

After Schimpff's, we headed back to the hotel relax before dinner.  Tonight we'll try a different restaurant downtown - Doc Crow's.  The restaurant is named after Dr. James Crow, called the father of modern distilling.  Its housed in a historic building on Whiskey Row and it was all very good.

After dinner, we got an unexpected treat - the Kentuckiana Gay Pride Parade went through downtown Louisville!  What an outrageous event...

Tomorrow is the British Bash - an all British car show.

Showtime!

6/16/2016

Today we had breakfast at the hotel, then drove to Waterfront Park, a large grassy field on the shore of the Ohio river.  I have not heard the official count, but there were about 800 cars.  It was a clear day, but became very hot with no shade on the show field.  There is an elevated Interstate highway along the edge and most people ended up moving their chairs into the shade of the Interstate.  The heat was oppressive, but there were lots of very nice cars, and people, to look at and talk to.

Excitement or heat exhaustion?

After the show, we went back to the hotel to cool off until it was time to eat.  For dinner, we found the Troll Pub Under the Bridge.  This is a cute restaurant/pub in the basement of an historic building, in the shadow of a highway bridge.  It was very good and refreshing.

Tomorrow, Friday, we will do some more exploring and sightseeing around Louisville.  Saturday, there is the British Bash, a British car show put on by the local British car show (today's show was a national show just for MGs), that we will attend.

Exploring Louisville

6/15/2016

Today we explored Louisville.  We ate breakfast at a good, local restaurant - Wild Eggs.  The drive over was through some beautiful, older neighborhoods.  The weather was nice and slightly overcast as we drove over with the top down.  Wild Eggs is a small, modest building, but apparently quite popular.    My omelet and pancake were good as was Kathy's Surfer Girl omelet.

After brunch, we drove to the area along Frankfort Ave. which has a selection of eclectic shops and restaurants.  We walked around and left a little financial stimulus!  As we were leaving, someone came up and started talking to us about the car and I asked him if he could tell us how to get to our next destination - an area called the Highlands.  He said that he lived there and was going home for lunch and he would lead us there.  He took us on a scenic route through old neighborhoods and a beautiful park.  It was great and we ended up right where we needed to go.  We found a parking space on a nice tree shaded street and walked around Highlands.  This is another street with many shops and restaurants.

While we were on the way back to the car, it got very dark, windy and started sprinkling.  But, it was short-lived and we got back to the car without getting wet.  We did put the top up for the drive back to the hotel, but did not encounter any more rain.  When we got back, we washed clothes and the car before going out  to eat.  We had dinner at the Cottage Inn, a restaurant in a small house in a quaint, old neighborhood.  The Cottage Inn has been around, in the same place, since 1929!  Its southern comfort food and it was very comfortable!!

After dinner, it was back to the hotel to get ready for the big show tomorrow!  At the hotel, I  noticed this warning in the elevator.  But, I don't think it is slippery from water.  I think it is slippery from oil that people are tracking in after stepping in it in the parking lot!

MG 2016

6/14/2016

Today, we attended tech sessions in the morning- I learned about tuning, carbs and ignitions.  Kathy learned about the famous Derby-Pie!  For lunch, went to Frank's Meat and Produce.  This is a small, neighborhood market with a counter in back where you order sandwiches to go.  No tables to eat there so we took it back and ate in the lobby of the hotel.  We had a corned beef sandwich and a salami sandwich, both with a huge stack of meat with lettuce, tomato and cheese.  Both were very tasty and all for $3.50 each!

After lunch there were some more tech sessions to attend, then time for dinner.  Tonight, there was a banquet for NAMGBR members - about 500 people - at the Crowne Plaza.  It was buffet style and was surprisingly good.  It was much better than the restaurant meal we had at the same hotel last night.  After dinner, we visited with some friends from out of town before turning in.

Toward MG 2016 - Made it to Louisville!

 6/13/2016

Today, we left Lexington and drove to the Woodford Reserve distillery in Versailles, KY.  The scenery is becoming pretty spectacular as we start passing horse farms.  At Woodford, we had a very educational tour and tasting, then had lunch before leaving and heading to Louisville.

The best part - tasting!

We finally made it to Louisville, and picked up our registration packets for the event.  There are lots of MGs in the parking lot and its very hot!  This evening, the group went to Churchill Downs for a tour and hors d'oeuvres.  The tour and museum were very interesting.  The thoroughbred Barbaro is buried outside the entrance.
Barbaro's final resting place at Churchill Downs

After returning from Churchill Downs, we ate at the Blue Horse, the restaurant in the Crowne Plaza hotel.  It was recommended to us, but being in the hotel should have been a red flag - it was awful - food and service.  We'll be eating at local restaurants in the future!

Toward MG 2016 - Day 2

6/12/2016

The Peachtree MG Registry Bourbon/Whiskey Tour MG 2016 began the second day as we left the home of the atomic bomb - Oak Ridge, TN.  It was a beautiful, clear and cool morning as we left, Just as we left Oak Ridge, we took a slight detour (wrong turn) and upon realizing the mistake, turned around in the parking lot of what looked like a hair salon/residence.  While there were several MGs in the front of the  house, a guy comes out and says, "I have one of those in the garage."  He proceeds to open the garage door and sure enough, there is a pale yellow MGB!  Out of all the houses in Oak Ridge to pick to turn around, we picked the one with an MG in the garage!

As we drove on toward Lexington, we passed through the town of Somerset.  And it was horrible.  It had gotten very hot again, and the highway goes  right through this town.  There must have been 30 traffic lights along a couple mile stretch and they are set so you get every one red!!  We finally got out of Somerset and continued on to Danville where we stopped for lunch at Mallards.  It was nice (and cool!) and they had a private room in the back where we could all sit together.

After lunch we continued to Lexington and our hotel.  Driving into Lexington, we began to pass very beautiful, manicured horse farms.  After relaxing and cooling off, we drove a short way to dinner.

We ate at Ramsey's, a local place that was highly recommended.  It was nothing fancy, but the food was good.  I had to try the famous Kentucky Hot Brown - this is a dish with white bread, sliced turkey and ham, tomatoes, bacon and cheese.  Lots and lots of cheese!  It was good, but don't know if I'd get it again.  After dinner, we stopped at Culvers Custard for some dessert.  Then it was back to the hotel to crash.  Tomorrow we'll stop at Woodford distillery on the way to Louisville.

On the road to MG 2016

6/11/2016

We left early this morning and traffic was very light and temperature was wonderfully cool.  We met others in the group in Cartersville, GA and 5  MGs and a Kia left about 9:30 AM.  We picked up another MG in Chatsworth and continued up Hwy. 411 into Tennessee.  We stopped at Jenkins Deli in Athens for lunch.   After lunch we drove to Oak Ridge, TN where we will stay tonight.  While it was very nice this morning, by early afternoon it had gotten very hot.  Looks like it is going to be very every day.  Tomorrow we will head to Lexington, KY.

After checking in the hotel, 2 more MGs arrived from Columbia, SC, also heading to Louisville!
