To French Lick, and Beyond!

June 13, 2014

We started this morning on our most ambitious trip.  The first portion will be to the NAMGBR's national meet in French Lick, IN.  We left this morning and met up with 3 other cars - another Midget, an MGB and a B-GT,  in Jasper, GA.

It was a beautiful, cool morning with the two Midgets leading the way.  However, just after leaving Blue Ridge, GA. it started to rain, fairly hard.  We drove a short way as it started to rain harder and spotted a business that looked closed, but had a nice portico in front.  So, we turned into the parking lot and all 4 of us fit under the portico.  As we were starting to put our tops up, a gentleman came out and said it was fine to stop there, and that he had coffee and restrooms inside.  Turns out we had stopped at Akins Funeral Home!

About the time we had the tops up, the rain had stopped.  But, because of the questionable weather, we kept them up.  We then passed through the cute town of McCaysville, GA, and continued on Hwy. 64 along the Ocoee River Scenic Byway which was a beautiful drive with steep rocks on one side and the river on the other.  We then stopped in Cleveland, TN for a very nice lunch at Aubrey's, a local chain.  After lunch, just after we got in our cars and started driving,  it started raining again and rained for quite awhile as we drove through Georgetown, Dayton and Pikeville, where we stopped for a break and checked out the antique stores downtown.

From Pikeville, it was a nice, rain-free drive into Crossville, where we will spend the night.  After checking into our hotel and relaxing for awhile, we loaded up and drove downtown to a local restaurant - Forte's On The Square - for dinner.  The food was very good (and the restaurant very crowded and very noisy) and afterwards, we headed back to the hotel for a good nights sleep.

Tomorrow we will head toward Bowling Green, KY. where we will meet up with about 6 other cars and travel together to French Lick.
